2. Calcium Signaling and Neuroprotection.

We also aim at establishing the role of mitochondria in neuroprotection in Alzheimer Disease (AD). We plan to investigate the mechanism by which NSAIDs and estrogens prevent neuronal cell death and protect against AD Specifically, we will study the chronic and acute effects of salicylate and 17β-estradiol on several aspects of neuronal calcium signalling, mieloid deposits, bcl-2 gene expression and cell viability in three models of AD: Primary central neurons from AD model transgenic mouse, primary neurons in chronic hypoxic conditions and fibroblasts from familiar AD (FAD) in which the associated mutation will be determined.
